On November 20, 2023 in Košice and November 21, 2023 in Veľký Šariš, the fourth module of ART&SIGNS pilot training took place. This module was dedicated to the basics of sign language that museum and gallery employees need when communicating with deaf visitors.
The participants learned the finger spelling alphabet and basics of signing for welcoming visitors, introducing themselves, providing information about the museum, or giving directions around the premises. They learned the fundamentals of sign language grammar, such as signs for expressing a question, negation, or emphasis.
They practiced signing simple sentences and mastered basic conversation in sign language. The instructors explained to them how to adapt communication to the visual needs of the deaf.
The museum employees especially appreciated the practical sign language practice, which will help them overcome the language barrier when communicating with the deaf. They hope to soon use the acquired skills in their work and contribute to better experiences for deaf visitors to galleries and museums in Slovakia.
